Cannonway Consultants, one of Hong Kong’s leading consultants to the construction industry, has won a contract to provide contractual, commercial and quantity surveying services on the construction of large scale gas to liquids processing plant in Ras Laffan, Qatar.
Qatar Shell GTL Ltd. (Qatar Petroleum Ltd. & Royal Dutch Shell), has commissioned the Pearl GTL project, comprising the development of upstream gas production facilities as well as an onshore GTL plant that will produce 140,000 barrels per day (bpd) of GTL products as well as approximately 120,000 bpd of associated condensate and liquefied petroleum gas. The project will be developed in two phases with the first phase operational around the end of 2009. The second phase will be completed around September 2010. The project includes the development of a block within Qatar's vast North Field gas reserves, which will produce 1.6 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. processing plant, worth in the region of US$1.6 billion, as part of the provision of natural gas to the United Arab Emirates. The gas is intended to be used for fuel power generation plants in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and also for export to other nations.
Cannonway has been appointed by a JV partner of the Main Contractor, whose scope of work includes design, engineer, procure, construction and project management as well as commissioning and rendering start-up assistance for the Liquids Processing Unit (LPU) for the GTL Project. The contract value is approximately USD$1.5 billion. The enormous scale of the undertaking, however, only really emerges when looked at from a construction perspective. For example, the plot size of 1.6 by 1.4 kilometres or 230 hectares is more than 450 football fields. The Pearl GTL Project will require 3000 items of equipment including - pumps, compressors, columns, and vessels. In comparison, the two LNG plants now operating in Ras Laffan have around half that number of equipment between them.
